Disciplines

At STIHL TIMBERSPORTS®, athletes compete in up to six dynamic disciplines, depending on the competition format. These challenges are divided into three axe and three saw disciplines. Each sport woodcutting discipline requires a mix of skill, strength and endurance, tool mastery and a deep understanding of wood as a material.

Each one pays homage to the traditional art of logging and recreates the felling and splitting of trees. The athletes have to demonstrate their skills with tools and wood and show a mixture of strength, endurance and precision.

Stock Saw

In this discipline, all athletes wield the MS 661 C-M, a commercially available STIHL chainsaw in the powerful 90+ cubic centimeter class. Their mission is to extract two precise slices of wood from a 40 cm diameter block. This must be done within a narrow 10 cm wide zone, using both downward and upward cuts. Achieving success here requires a delicate balance of pressure and speed, skilfully adjusted to the nature of the wood. Precision and mastery with the chainsaw are a minimum requirement!

Underhand Chop

This discipline represents the art of cutting through a felled tree. Positioned on top of a horizontally anchored block, athletes wield their axes to slice through the impressive 32 cm (or 30 cm for the rookies) thick trunk. The challenge? The log must be sliced through from both sides. Any attempt to cut from just one side results in disqualification. It's a test of skill that demands precision and prowess from our competitors.

Single Buck

In this discipline, athletes must cut a wooden disc from a horizontally anchored block, measuring 46 cm in diameter (or 40 cm for the rookies). Armed with a hand-pulled saw that spans about two meters in length, they must showcase both rhythm and technique to achieve a remarkable time of under 15 seconds. It's a thrilling spectacle where precision and skill set the stage for a breathtaking race against the clock.

Standing Block

In this discipline, the art of tree felling with an axe is simulated. Athletes must swiftly cut through a vertically anchored block of wood, measuring 30 cm in diameter (or 27 cm for rookies), from both sides. Success here depends on precise axe strokes and a forceful swing, making it a true test of skill and power.

Springboard

In this discipline, athletes face an imposing task - they must conquer a vertically anchored wooden log equipped with two footboards, properly named springboards. The goal? To skilfully knock through a wooden block with a diameter of 27 cm, perched at a height of approximately 2.80 meters.
Positioned at the log's midpoint, the springboard adds an extra layer of complexity. For rookies, it's a lower height, and they use only one springboard. This discipline demands precise technique, strength, balance, and finesse. It's the ultimate test of athleticism and skill!

Hot Saw

In the world of STIHL TIMBERSPORTS®, Hot Saws take centre stage. These individually tuned, intensely powerful machines are the stars of this discipline.
The objective is to slice through three wooden discs with lightning speed. The cuts must be done within 15 cm of a horizontally anchored wooden block, boasting a diameter of 46 cm. The true challenge lies in controlling the concentrated power of these chainsaws, which can accelerate up to 80 horsepower. With a chain speed of approximately 240 km/h and a weight of around 27 kg, athletes must gather all their power to conquer this mechanical beast.
